The other day I overheard a woman speaking to her friend, it was something most of you have surely heard many times in your life. “No matter what I do and how much exercise I get, I can’t lose weight.”

With millions of dollars spent on weight loss books, programs, diets, people will do seemingly anything to shed their unwanted pounds. There is certainly no lack of information. In fact, there’s too much out there leading to mass confusion, trends that don’t sustain weight loss, and an array of opinions leading us to question where to even begin. We continue to complicate the issue every single day.

It’s almost as if we’re on a constant search for the magic bullet. There is none.

Having a healthy body and a healthy mind is a full time job. We cannot expect a bottle of pills or a six week program to change our body for good. Yet we’re spending millions on exactly that. What’s not easy is changing your lifestyle to foster the habits needed to sustain weight loss and provide optimal health, and it is the lifestyle habits that are all too often ignored.

As a nutritionist, my job goes beyond just the scope of what we put into our mouths. I strive to teach people that they alone are in charge of their body and their life. We can’t let tools be in charge, we have to take responsibility and take action. Behavioural modifications, many which seem uncomfortable or daunting at first, are absolutely necessary if we want to change our bodies.

Once we’ve seen progress and experienced what it is like to feel vibrantly healthy, it becomes easy to continue making the right choices. I’m not saying we can’t treat ourselves or splurge every once in a while. But, once we know how good we can feel, we become more in touch with the signals from our body, and thus will continue to make the majority of positive choices. But if we never have those positive feelings, it can all seem like a fleeting dream.

Change is hard. Change brings fear to most of us. For many, becoming complacent with health and weight challenges is the easiest choice. As time goes on, many of us will go continue to push ourselves through a downward spiral, making the ultimate goal of optimal health seemingly more and more unattainable. And then our vitality is robbed. We can become harder on ourselves, more depressed, and even feel hopeless. We can put up imaginary walls and limits on ourselves which keep us down. Our social lives are often impacted and we see no reasonable way out.

Is there an easy solution? It’s in our hands to take action. Small changes are easier than drastic ones but can make all the difference. Most weight loss programs are either a 180 degree change from our current lifestyles or are only attacking one element, and that is part of the reason why they’re not sustainable.

You have a unique body chemistry. You have a specific metabolism. You have different energy requirements from your neighbour. You therefore require an action plan that is tailored to you and your lifestyle. Maybe you have had your gallbladder removed or have issues with your thyroid. We are all different and we all respond differently.

Thankfully, the essence of our body’s chemistry is universal. When we have elevated levels of C-Reactive Protein (CRP) we have a clear marker for inflammation in our bodies. High levels of inflammation can cause heart disease, blood lipid disorders, diabetes, high blood pressure and a resulting inability to lose weight. By analyzing your blood’s chemistry, we can create a personalised program to help you reduce inflammation, increase energy, and balance your hormones—specifically, insulin.

Insulin is a hormone that puts sugar into your cells. The so-called “Western Diet” consisting of highly refined carbohydrates (for example pasta, bagels, muffins) and sugars causes our insulin levels to be consistently elevated. When we have elevated insulin levels, three things happen. First, we enter a cycle of rising and crashing blood sugars, forcing us to crave more foods which will continue to damage our hormonal balance and making us constantly hungry. Secondly, our body will be much more prone to store the incoming energy as fat. Third, we actually block our ability to burn fat.

Consistently living with increased blood sugar concentrations can be extremely harmful as glucose molecules bind with proteins, ruining the protein molecules normal functions. We need those proteins to help us uptake insulin properly and to help prevent this cycle.

You can start changing your body’s chemistry today. For example, eating one apple a day lowers cholesterol and uric acid unlike no other fruit and can help lower insulin levels. Cinnamon has been shown to improve our body’s ability to uptake insulin. Foods that contain high levels of healthy fats don’t actually make us fat, in fact they do the opposite—they stabilize our blood sugar levels and prevent them from crashing down and keep our energy consistent. Starting each of our meals with two bites of protein causes our pancreas to produce the hormone glucagon, a hormone which blocks insulin production resulting in lower insulin levels which stimulates fat burning, blocks fat synthesis, and prevents the dreaded attacks of ravenous appetite.

If you know more details of your unique composition, you can begin bringing your body into a more ideal balance immediately. There is an approach which takes all of these factors into consideration, if you’d like to learn more, take a look at how Metabolic Balance is built around you and your lifestyle. Food isn’t everything though. It takes a tough mind of determination, action, and a revamp of your psyche to make change, but it is possible.

Food is life. Food is medicine. Metabolic Balance understands this at its core. The MB program is backed with over 25 years of scientific studies and wisdom that ancient cultures have known for centuries. Toronto nutritionists like myself are beginning to recognize this wisdom, which is why I recently became a certified Metabolic Balance Coach.

This shtick-free, long-term weight loss program focuses on all-natural, food-based nutrition to permanently kick yo-yo dieting. MB’s unique weight-loss and health roadmap based on personalized nutrition plans is what attracted me to the program. When I learned that the personal nutrition plans were customized for each user based on their unique bloods values, medical history and personal food preferences, in order to create the biochemical changes needed for weight management—I was hooked.

As a Toronto Nutritionist I am now able to bring this unique, scientific, biological nutrition road map to Toronto, and my clients.

The Metabolic Balance Roadmap
The MB roadmap consists of four distinct phases, that fall into either “body chemistry” or “food chemistry”, which together will balance your hormones, enzymes, insulin production and bio-chemistry.

Using an in-depth analysis I can help determine the best foods for you, not based on caloric or fat content, but on foods effect on your body’s hormonal system. These properly-selected foods will regulate your insulin levels (amongst other things), which will avoid the food cravings and burn-out that leads to yo-yo dieting.

By balancing and strengthening your complete hormonal system your body will find its ideal weight naturally. Users who are overweight often experience a speedy weight reduction, losing anywhere from 3lbs to 6 lbs a week—while improving overall health and energy levels.

The Proof is in the Pudding (and no—you can’t have pudding)
A recent year-long study that was published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism (Vol. 2010, Article 197656) concluded that “relevant blood parameters as well as Health-Related Quality of Life improved significantly” in people following a plan created by a certified Metabolic Balance coach.

Can it Help Me?
Clients who have heard about my newest certification are asking me, “Jane, can it help me?”. I am a firm believer that this program can help all of us improve our overall health. If you’re curious, simply give me a ring—as a Toronto nutritionist I’m excited to share this with my clients.

The first time I met Joanne, she was overweight, sad, depressed and having financial problems. I had just launched my holistic practice and was discovering ways to successfully help people heal themselves. As our first session wound to a close, I gave Joanne an exercise as homework: For the next 6 weeks, she was to say, ‘I love myself’, ‘I love myself’, ‘I love myself’, as often as possible.

Joanne left with a little smile on her face. Six weeks later, when she walked in to my office, I honestly didn’t recognize her. She had lost 25 lbs. and was radiant. I asked her what she’d done to transform herself to that degree, completely forgetting the exercise I’d given her. When she told me how religiously she’d done her homework, I was blown away by the results and began to use the mantra on myself.

Nikki, another client, was a beautiful hair dresser, full of confidence and looked absolutely amazing. When I enquired about her history, she told me that she used to have low self-esteem. One day, she’d decided that from then on, she’d put on her best clothes every day. Hmm I thought I should try that as well. Within a few days, of donning my best clothes every day, people began to complement me on my appearance. At the same time, I was using my affirmation, ‘I love myself’. I felt that my cells were being changed with my new affirmation.

Then came Victoria. She’s a long-time friend with a lot of confidence. Several of us went on a trip to Jamaica. The first morning, we were putting on our bathing suits to go out to the beach. I came out in a one piece, but Victoria, who is a large woman, sauntered out in a bikini. She strutted down the beach looking stunning, radiant and confident. I thought to myself, why don’t I feel that way? Although, I was extremely disciplined and did some form of exercise every day, I realized I was very critical with myself. After observing Victoria, I decided from then on, I was going to enjoy my body and love it, warts and all.

Then I met Madeline. Madeline, a student of mine told me she lived every day like it was her birthday. Each day, she dressed as if she was celebrating her special day and because it was her birthday, she adopted a feeling of being special, just as one does on their birthday. As Madeline continued to apply her ‘birthday technique’ a deep love for herself developed. After, discovering Madeleine’s secret, I too began to live each day like it was my birthday.

Sometime later, after saying I love myself all day every day, and wearing my best clothes every day, and living each day like it was my birthday, it happened. Finally, I truly loved myself! I am not perfect, but I love and respect myself.

I have a personal motto that fits with all I’ve learned from these four women: People have to help me grow or they have to go! And because of this, I surround myself with people like Joanne, Nikki, Victoria and Madeline.

Robyn Sharma is one of my favorite authors. He says that there are no extra people on earth. Everyone matters. Everyone has a purpose. Reading these words was the icing on the cake; I love myself and know that I along with every human being am special and unique.

What I learned from these amazing women can be applied by anyone. Try these techniques and you will be surprised by the results; I was. The changes will not happen overnight, but one day you will look in the mirror and discover you truly love yourself too!

Even as children, we learn important life lessons that carry us through our lives. I was eleven years old, and sitting on the dock at the cottage our family was renting that summer, when I saw a seagull flying over the water looking for food. I was totally fascinated when from way up in the sky the bird came down with an incredible splash and flew up with a prized fish in its mouth. I sat there in amazement at the birds focus and by its ability to see the fish below the surface of the water from such a distance.

This small but important moment was a turning point in my life. What I learned stayed with me until adulthood: If I want something, I must keep it in my sight and be totally focused on the end goal; otherwise it will get away.

Many years later, I heard someone say that your thoughts go out into the universe and come back to you manifesting in your life as reality. This concept, that what you think is what you attract, rang true for me and has since proven itself to be an exceedingly important principle to live by. Time and time again this philosophy has shown itself to be true and is now a defining principle that underlies how I approach all of my goals, actions and choices.

So what practices can you use to go after your dreams as directly as the seagull did his dinner?

Here are the steps I consistently use to make my dreams a reality:

1. Begin with writing down your goal: Writing things down gives them strength and cements them into your consciousness.

2. Create a picture of what you want in your mind’s eye and visualize yourself in the state of completion: How does it feel, taste, sound? Where will you be when this occurs; what will you be doing?

3. Get really creative and infuse the goal with all of your emotions and creative energy: You may choose to create a vision board to help you stay focused on the end result.

4. Finally surrender your goal and let it go. You have to trust that it will show up in the best way possible; perhaps in a way that’s slightly different then you pictured.

Now that the Olympics are taking place in England, we see numerous examples of the discipline it takes to achieve a long-held goal. An athlete, who wins a gold medal, may have spent years visualizing themselves on the podium holding that precious medal. And of course they had a teacher or mentor to show them where they needed improvement. And, you can be sure that the athlete had an unwavering sense of self-worth.

Another important point for anyone who truly wants success is: You are the company you keep; so surround yourself with people who are positive and successful. The energy of successful people rubs off and supports you in your quest. And after you have achieved your goal, remember to keep an attitude of gratitude for all you have been given. Never doubt that you deserve the very best, as the universe is always working on your behalf.

I like to say: Life is like a restaurant; you have to put your order in. Always expect the best and above all, never, ever give up.

I’ve had many opportunities since that time as an eleven year old, to test the principles of success I learned from my friend the seagull and because of that, I now live a life of incredible success and joy. Try these principles out for yourself and see how your life changes for the better. I promise you’ll even surprise yourself.

Hi, Jane Durst Pulkys here, Toronto’s leading holistic nutritionist and health expert. In this video I talk about diets and why they don’t work. My interpretation of the word D.I.E.T. is “Doomed Investment Every Time”. People consistently fail at dieting and losing weight long term because they don’t make healthy eating and living a central part of their lifestyle.

What I recommend people do is to follow the 80/20 rule. The 80/20 rule means that what matters most is what you do 80% of the time. So what you do is eat amazing, health rich foods 80% of the time and then give yourself a 20% window to eat some of the treats you enjoy. This makes it so that you don’t completely deprive yourself and maintain balance while leading a healthier lifestyle.

Jane Durst Pulkys, www.creativehealth.ca, talks about the 5 winning daily practices for maintaining a healthy body weight.

In her video Jane explores the 5 key daily components that the successful people use to keep themselves at their optimal body weight; nutrition, exercise, hydration, sleep and stress management. Jane gives easy to follow tips for each practice to help viewers easily incorporate these essential habits into their daily lives.

Standing in the women’s change room at the local health club, I watched a woman climb on to the bathroom scale. Her mouth flew open as she read the numbers and her hand clasped her mouth. Deflated she slowly climbed off and walked away with a distraught look on her face. I knew in that moment her day had been ruined by the number she’d seen on the scale. If only she knew the real secret to weight loss. For the last century people have spent millions of dollars to achieve the perfect weight and it doesn’t work!

We have become so obsessed by calories, low fat, high fibre, low carbs and diets galore. What if this had nothing to do with weight loss? Imagine never counting another calorie for the rest of your life and achieving the perfect weight? Well you can and it is simple.

The Secret is not food, it is habits. Take a look at the people in your life who look like they never have to worry about their weight. They make it look easy and they can eat pretty much eat anything they want. How is that possible? They have a secret. They practice daily habits that ensure they never have to go on a diet. Starting with these daily habits right now can ensure that you are on the road to success. You’re never too old

, never too late, never too overweight, and never too sick to change your habits.

What are the habits I’m talking about? Number one,
these people drink between five and eight glasses of water; no pop, juice or milk (that is for infants). They avoid the five new food groups which are fast, frozen, fried, junk and processed. These people have a diet mostly devoid of white foods such as bagels, muffins, cookies, donuts, pancake and white bread. What they do eat is five fruits and seven veggies every day. Who ever said fruit was fattening? By eating whole, live foods they feel satisfied because foods rich in minerals are what your cells actually crave. Also, these people enjoy meat, chicken, eggs, nuts seeds and whole grains. When on the run they look for fresh foods, not food that comes in a bag, box or pick up window. When they travel they bring along green drinks and nut bars so that they don’t have to eat the processed food that they are usually faced with.

They get up early so that they can plan their day. Exercise is definitely part of their daily regime. It is not an endurance test for them but something they really enjoy doing and their secret is that they have planned the night before what they will be eating and doing the next day. They exercise almost every day. They believe in balance and if they take time off to balance themselves. These habits are done not as a punishment but as a reward. If they have over indulged on the weekend, they cut themselves a bit of slack and start fresh on Monday with the same healthy habits as before.

They LOVE food and they feel energetic. Having a bowel movement every day comes because of the healthy foods they eat. Their dinner plate is full of colour and they do their best to stay away from the beige foods: pasta, pizza, but they do indulge once in a while. Fat is their friend. Taking two tablespoons of flax oil every day makes them feel satisfied and helps their cravings for sugar leave. They love to eat food from the Garden of Eden and they rarely consume food that is found in the middle of the grocery store. When at a party they look for the fresh veggies and dip and always ask for extra veggies in the restaurant. Their grocery buggies are full of live food. Microwaving is a no-no as they understand that their bodies cannot digest these foods because of the harm microwaves does to the energy of food.

Every day add one of these habits into your daily regime and watch how easy it is. Focusing on adding things into your life is much harder than denying yourself. It is much easier than you think and the results are amazing.

Take the stairs at work, park your car further away and begin your new daily habits and start to really enjoy your body as it is the only one you have. Discover your new found energy which will last a lifetime. Doing all of this, you will NEVER have to weigh your self-esteem!
